(Narrated by Abu Dawud).Then came down the verse that ordered him to do fardhu fasting only in the month of Ramadan.
So that all previous fasts are no longer obligatory, but their position becomes sunnah.
He had fasted before Ramadan for 17 months.The obligation to fast during the month of Ramadan is prescribed on the 10th of Shaban in the second year after the migration of the Prophet Muhammad to Medina.
